SINGAPORE, 9 April 2017: Olympic champions Fiji beat South Africa 22-0 this evening in Hong Kong to win the HSBC Hong Kong 7s to claim their first tournament victory of the 2016-17 series.
Defending HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series champion Fiji scored four tries in the final as a weekend of pulsating rugby came to a thrilling close. The result meant a first tournament win for new coach Gareth Baber and was their third consecutive win in Hong Kong. With the victory, Fiji jumps to second place in the standings ahead of England while the Blitzboks remain on top with three tournaments left this season.
Baber admitted his team were happy to finally get a tournament win under their belts: “With the quality of players we have here, I’m very aware that we should be winning Cups. I’m also aware that Ben (Ryan – former coach) did a great job and that we needed to keep the pressure on South Africa at the top of the table. I knew they could do it – it was just a matter of time before we could get it done.”
Added Fiji captain Osea Kolinisau: “South Africa are a good side. We weren’t focusing on the third consecutive win, it was just a final in this series but I guess in Hong Kong it is a home away from home. We watched our idols play here and it is a dream of young Fijians to play here. To the people back home, this is for you guys!”
Australia claimed bronze after beating USA 26-19, while Scotland won the Challenge Trophy after beating defending Singapore 7s champion Kenya 21-19. Meanwhile, Spain secured their spot on next season’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series after beating Germany 12-7 in the World Rugby series qualifier final at the Hong Kong stadium.
